Pete Beachill Music presents: Big Broad Band
In the summer of 2013 we formed The Super C Big Band, to honour our friend and colleague, trumpet legend Derek Watkins, and to help keep his name and his music alive forever.
The band wanted to document the style of music that was played by Derek for the big band genre. It was the intention for The Super C Big Band to perform at Derek’s Memorial Concert in March 2014, and to see what the audience reaction was - maybe we could take this powerhouse big band on the road?
The concert was a huge success! The decision was made, the audience loved it, we all had a blast. For a group of session musicians, playing to a live audience again was intoxicating. It reminded us all of why we started playing music in the first place, because the life of a session musicaian can get fairly isolated. You rehearse the cue, record the cue, and move onto the next, you don’t hear it again until the recording comes out months later. But here you had a live audience, reacting in real time! Not only reacting but interacting with musicians!
